There are thousands of kinds of mushroom. There is a reason this is the one we teach to beginners.
What we call the oyster mushroom comes from the genus Pleurotus. The most common in the Philippines are Pleurotus florida and Pleurotus ostreatus. It is the white, oyster-shaped mushroom — which is exactly where the name comes from.
| Trait | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Aggressive mycelium | It colonises the substrate fast, before mould can get a foothold. It forgives mistakes that other mushrooms would not. |
| Wide heat tolerance | It grows in Philippine heat without air-conditioning. |
| It eats almost anything | Sawdust, rice straw, corn stalks, coffee husks — almost any dead plant material. |
| Fast | A few weeks from planting to first harvest, not months. |
| The market already exists | It is already known in markets and restaurants. You do not have to teach the buyer what it is. |
And where to buy culture or spawn if you would rather not make your own.
Never collect mushrooms from the forest or your yard to cultivate. There are deadly mushrooms that look almost identical to edible ones. Use only culture that comes from a source you can trust.
