There is a right firmness when packing substrate into plastic.
Too loose and there are large air gaps inside. The mycelium cannot travel continuously and colonisation is slow. Too tight and there is no air at all — and mycelium needs air as much as you do.
What you want is a firm bag that stands up without slumping, but still gives slightly when pressed.
A hot bag cannot be planted. Heat kills mycelium — the very same heat that killed the microbes earlier.
Wait until you can hold it comfortably for a long moment without burning your hand.
When planting spawn, being sparing is expensive. More spawn means more starting points, faster colonisation, and less opportunity for mould.
The spawn you save today you pay for in spoiled bags later.
